Coaches and Staff
Chip Pettit – Head Coach
Chip Pettit enters his 9th season at the helm of the Bulldogs in 2009. Coach Pettit is a graduate (1992) of Crown Point High School, Valparaiso University (B.S.), and Indiana University (M.S.). After graduating from college, he returned to Crown Point and taught Social Studies at Taft Middle School. In addition, he coached football, basketball, and baseball at Crown Point High School. Coach Pettit then left Crown Point to teach Social Studies and serve as the first Head Football Coach in the history of Wheeler High School. In Coach Pettit’s tenure at CPHS, the Bulldogs have set school-records for wins in a season (12) and logged back-to-back undefeated regular seasons (2005 & 2006). The Bulldogs have won the Duneland Conference Championship for three consecutive years (2005, 2006, 2007). In 2006, the Dogs also won their first Sectional Championship in 15 years. Coach Pettit was named the 5A Coach of the Year in 2002 & 2005. He served as the Region 1 Director for the Indiana Football Coaches Association in 2004. Coach Pettit was a member of the North All-Star coaching staff for the IFCA All-Star game in July of 2007. He is currently teaching US Government and serving as the Dean of Students at Crown Point High School. Coach Pettit and his wife, Karin, reside in Crown Point with their son, Will (7) and daughter, Avery (5).
Dan Hartman – Defensive Coordinator
Dan Hartman begins his second year with the Crown Point Bulldog football program. In 2008, Dan coached the defensive backs and coordinated the J.V. defense. He is a graduate of East Central High School (2002) in southeast Indiana. After High School, he continued his football career at Thomas More College ( Crestview Hills, Kentucky ) where he earned a degree in Secondary Education (2006). Coach Hartman is entering his 4th year coaching football. He has served as the Wide Receivers coach at East Central High School and the Offensive Coordinator at Cascade High School where he taught Social Studies and also served as the Assistant Head Coach for the Girls Basketball team. Dan will be teaching in the Social Studies Department at Crown Point High School. Dan resides in Crown Point.
Brett St. Germain – Offensive Coordinator
Coach St. Germain enters his second year as the Offensive Coordinator for the Bulldogs. Brett also coaches the wide receivers. Coach St. Germain is a graduate of Merrillville High School (1986) and Indiana University Northwest (1993), and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Administration through Olivet Nazarene University. Previously, Coach St.Germain was the Head Football Coach at Andrean High School, which captured the 3A State Championship during the 2004 season. Coach St.Germain has also taught at Lake Station, Portage, and Wheeler High School. Coach St.Germain will be teaching Psychology and U.S. History at CPHS. He and his wife Julie reside in Valparaiso , with their son, Bryce (10) and daughter, Mia (7).
Mark Croell – Offensive Line
Mark Croell is entering his 9th year at Crown Point. Coach Croell has served as Offensive Coordinator for six seasons and Co-Defensive Coordinator for one year. In 2009, Mark will serve as the Offensive Line Coach. Coach Croell is a graduate of Portage High School (1992), Wabash College (B.S.), and Purdue University (B.S.). He teaches U.S. History at Col. John Wheeler Middle School. Mark is also the Athletic Director at Wheeler Middle School. Prior to coming to Crown Point, Coach Croell taught Social Studies at Union Township Middle School. Coach Croell and his wife, Patti, reside in Crown Point with their sons, Brett (5) and Drew (3).
Kenny Boyd – Running Backs & Tight Ends
Coach Boyd is entering his 4th season with the Bulldogs. Coach Boyd was last with the Bulldogs during the 2005 as a part of the Duneland Conference Championship and undefeated regular season. Coach Boyd has also coached at Highland High School, Andrean High School, and Morton High School respectively. Coach Boyd has spent the previous three years teaching 8th grade social studies at Scott Middle School in Hammond, Indiana. Coach Boyd is a graduate of Highland High School (1999) and Calumet College of St. Joseph (B.S.). Coach Boyd will be teaching U.S. and World History at CPHS. Coach Boyd and his fiancée Amanda reside in Highland with their daughter Addison (1).
Sean Granger – Defensive Backs
Sean Granger begins his 8th season as a coach for the Crown Point Bulldogs. In his career with the Dogs, Coach Granger has served as Linebackers coach and Defensive Backs coach. Coach Granger is a graduate of Andrean High School (1992) and Wabash College (1996). Sean works with his father (Joe) at Commercial Sweeping Corp. here in Crown Point. Prior to coming to the Dogs, Sean coached one season (2000) with Coach Pettit at Wheeler High School. Coach Granger and his wife Melissa, reside is Crown Point with sons Reilly (6) and Carson (3).
Dan Knaga – Defensive Line
Dan Knaga is entering his 4th season with the Crown Point Football staff. This is his second season working with the Varsity. Dan is also an assistant coach for the Crown Point Baseball team and Taft Middle School Basketball team. Dan is a graduate of Crown Point High School (2001) and Carthage College (2005) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in History. Dan is currently working at Taft Middle School as the Alternative Classroom teacher. Dan resides in Crown Point.
Mike Bork – Linebackers
Michael Bork is in his 3rd year with the Crown Point Football Staff. Coach Bork is a graduate of Crown Point High School (2006). He was a member of the undefeated senior class in 2005. He is currently working towards a degree in Secondary Education at Purdue Calumet. In 2007, Mike worked with the Freshman running backs and defensive backs. In 2008, Mike worked with the inside linebackers. Mike resides in Crown Point.
Don Emery – Varsity Assistant
Don Emery begins his 2nd year with the Bulldog Football program. In 2008, Don coached the Freshman offensive line. This year, Don will be coaching the offensive line on the Varsity & JV. Prior to joining the high school staff, Don coached for 6 years in the Crown Point Jr. Bulldog program. He attended Taylor University (1980) where he was a two year starter for the Trojan football team, received a BBA from Penn State (1981) and his law degree from Valparaiso University (1985). He is a partner in the Merrillville law firm of Lucas Holcomb & Medrea. Don and his wife Cheri have twins Chase and Kelsey (16) and live in Crown Point.
Tim Gramenz – Varsity Assistant
Tim Gramenz begins his 1st year with the Crown Point Bulldog Football program as an assistant coach working with the defensive lineman. Coach Gramenz is a graduate of Crown Point High School (2003). He earned a degree in Business Administration and is currently working towards earning a degree in Human Resources at Purdue University Calumet. Tim is currently working at Crown Point High School as the In-School Suspension Supervisor. Tim resides in Crown Point.
Tom Gulbrandsen – Varsity Assistant
Tom Gulbrandsen is excited to begin his 3rd season as an Assistant Coach working with the defensive backs. Coach Gulbrandsen is a graduate of Addison Trail High School (1975) in Addison, Illinois. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Tom has been a 12-year volunteer for the Bulldog football program. He is currently employed by Kemp’s LLC in Chicago as a sales account manager. Coach Gulbrandsen resides in Crown Point, and is proud to have raised two CPHS graduates: Sara (1999) and Eric (2003).
Duke LaMere – Varsity Assistant
Duke LaMere begins his second year with the Bulldog football program. Duke will be working with the Varsity & JV Offense. In 2008, Duke worked with the tailbacks. Duke was a wide receiver on Andrean’s 2004 State Championship Team. Coach LaMere graduated with a degree in advertising from Purdue in 2009. Duke lives in Crown Point.
Mark Garrett – Strength & Conditioning
Coach Garrett comes to Crown Point from Milan High School. Milan is small school in southeastern Indiana, near Cincinnati. In his nine year tenure as strength coach at Milan the Indians won over 40 team championships in ten different sports. Coach Garrett also coached the Hoosier Barbell Club, an Olympic weightlifting team. HBC won a nationally a publicized event, the WerkSan High School Championships. The club also finished fourth at USA Weightlifting School Age Nationals held at Disneyworld in Florida. Mark acknowledges Crown Point’s, Frank Eksten, as being vital to his development as a coach. Coach Garrett says, “I would like to say that I am not here to make competitive weightlifters. I am here to work with all of the athletic teams in developing athletes. My ultimate goal is to help bring more state championships to Crown Point High School.” Coach Garrett is a graduate of Cloverdale High School (1988) and the University of Maine – Presque Isle (1992). Mark and his wife, Wendi, live in Crown Point with their three children, A.J. (7), Kerry (5), and Michael (2).
Trent Trump – Head Trainer
Trent Trump is beginning his 14th season as the Athletic Trainer for the Bulldogs. Trent is a graduate (1991) of Crown Point High School and Ball State University (B.S.) where he earned his degree in Athletic Training. Trent and his wife, Mary Ellen, reside in Crown Point with their son, Ethan (6).
Jake Rodriguez – Freshman Head Coach
Jake Rodriguez is beginning his 5th season with the Crown Point football staff. This is his third year as the Head Coach of the Freshman squad. Prior to 2007, Coach Rodriguez was the Freshman Defensive Coordinator. Coach Rodriguez is a graduate (2000) of Merrillville High School. Jake received a bachelor’s degree from Milikin University, in Decatur, Illinois, where he wrestled all four years. He is teaching physical education at Crown Point High School and is also a Varsity Wrestling Coach. Jake resides in Crown Point.
Matt McCaleb – Freshman Assistant
Matt McCaleb is beginning his 6th year with the Crown Point staff. This is Matt’s third season with the Freshman team. Prior to 2007, Coach McCaleb had been the Head Coach at Taft Middle School. Matt is a graduate of Chesterton High School (1997) and Valparaiso University (B.S.). Coach McCaleb teaches World History at CPHS. Matt is also an Assistant Coach for the CP Baseball Team. He resides in Crown Point.
Branden Lorek – Freshman Assistant
Branden Lorek begins his 2nd year with the Bulldog Football program serving as a Freshman Assistant Coach. Branden graduated from Fenton High School, in Bensenville, Illinois (2000). Coach Lorek received a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He was also a four-year member of the wresting team. Branden is currently teaching special education at Crown Point High School. He is also the Head J.V. Wrestling Coach.
Mike Damjanovic – Freshman Assistant
Mike Damjanovic is in his 1st year with the Crown Point Football Staff. Coach Damjanovic is a graduate of Crown Point High School (2007). He was a member of the sectional championship team and undefeated senior class of 2006. He is currently working towards a degree in physical therapy assisting at Ivy Tech. In 2009, Mike will work with the freshman team, serving as defensive line coach. Coach Damjanovic resides in Crown Point.
Greg Doane – Head Coach
Taft Middle School
Greg Doane is beginning his 5th year with the Crown Point football staff. In addition to coaching football, he has coached volleyball, basketball, and track. He has taught Health at Taft Middle School for the past ten years. Coach Doane is a graduate of Chesterton High School (1982) and Purdue University (B.S.). Greg resides in Valparaiso with his wife of 22 years, Rhonda, and their sons, Jay (16) and Tyler (14).
Darren Clauss – Taft Assistant
Darren Clauss is beginning his 8th year with the Crown Point staff. Darren is a graduate of Valparaiso High School (1991) and Ball State University (B.S.). Coach Clauss teaches art at Taft Middle School. He resides in Valparaiso.
Dann Ellenwood – Taft Assistant
Dann Ellenwood begins his third year with the Crown Point School Corporation and the Bulldog football program. He is a 1996 graduate of Lake Central High School where he was a 3 year letter-winner at quarterback. Coach Ellenwood was part of the 1993 Lake Central Football team that was a state finalist. After High School, he continued his football career at Concordia University (Chicago), before finishing his degree at Purdue University Calumet. Coach Ellenwood is entering his 12th year of coaching football, with stops at Grimmer Middle School, Lake Central High School, Wheeler High School and Portage High School . Coach Ellenwood teaches 6th grade social studies at Taft Middle School and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in School Administration. Dann resides in Wheatfield with his wife, Rachel and their son, Brodie (2).
Josh Goeringer – Taft Assistant
Josh Goeringer is beginning his 2nd season coaching football at Taft Middle School. He is also the head coach of the 7th grade basketball team and is an assistant track coach, all at Taft. He is entering his first full year teaching math at the 6th grade level at Taft. A Crown Point native, graduating in 2002, he played 2 years basketball while at Merrillville High School then finished his high school career playing ball at C.P. He then went on and graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, 2007. Coach Goeringer resides here in Crown Point.
Jim Lemon – Head Coach
Wheeler Middle School
Jim Lemon is beginning his 5th year with the Crown Point staff, and his 1st as the Head Coach at Colonel Wheeler. Jim is a graduate (1997) of Munster High School and Purdue University (2004). In 2005 & 2006, Jim coached the defensive line at Taft Middle School. In 2007 & 2008, Jim served as the Defensive Coordinator at Colonel Wheeler. Coach Lemon teaches social studies at Colonel Wheeler Middle School. Jim resides in Munster.
Matt Malloy – Wheeler Assistant
Matt Malloy is beginning his first year with the Crown Point football staff. Matt is a graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School (2003) and Butler University (2007). Prior to coming to Crown Point, Matt coached seventh grade football and taught Language Arts at New Augusta Public Academy North in Indianapolis. Matt teaches English at Colonel Wheeler Middle School. Matt and his wife, Allison, reside in Crown Point.
Ernie Huffman – Wheeler Assistant
Ernie Huffman is entering his 4th season with the Crown Point football staff. Coach Huffman comes to Crown Point from the Lafayette area, where he coached at the Varsity/JV level for Lafayette Central Catholic. He is teaching science at Colonel Wheeler Middle School. Ernie and his family reside in Crown Point.
Josh Graegin – Wheeler Assistant
Josh Graegin is entering his second year with the Crown Point staff. Josh is a graduate of Lowell High School (1996) and Purdue University (2007). Coach Graegin teaches social studies at Wheeler Middle School. Josh and his wife, Krystin, reside in Cedar Lake with their son Dominic (3) and daughter Adyson (1 month).
